About Us
Reverend Sarah Currie, Pastor
Sarah Currie was appointed as pastor of Wimberley UMC in June 2010. Sarah graduated from Millsaps College, a United Methodist liberal arts college in Jackson, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, and subsequently completed a Master's Degree in English at Mississippi State University. For several years while in graduate school and beyond, she taught college English at both Mississippi State and Tougaloo College, a predominantly African-American liberal arts college near Jackson.
Upon moving to Texas in 1982, she taught in the English department at the University of Texas for several years, while pursuing a Ph.D. in English. Her call to ordained ministry evolved out of teaching, and she completed seminary at the Seminary of the Southwest while continuing her doctoral studies. Having been an active member of University UMC since moving to Texas, Sarah began the practice of ministry there as an intern/associate.
Over the past twenty years in ministry Sarah has served five different charges in three districts - UUMC and Bethany in Austin, Pettus/Pawnee in the Corpus Christi district, FUMC Pleasanton in the San Antonio district, and for the past eight years pastor of St. Luke UMC in Austin.
She has been blessed to be married to the Rev. John Campbell for seventeen years, and together have four children and two grandchildren. John has also served two United Methodist congregations as their pastor -seven years as pastor of Karnes City UMC and two years as pastor of Decker UMC.
Most recently Sarah has served on the boards of the New Life Institute Counseling Center, Austin Area Inter-religious Ministries, and the Wesley Foundation Campus Ministries board of trustees. In the greater UMC community, Sarah has been active as an Emmaus spiritual director, as a mentor, guide, and liaison pastor for numerous candidates for ordained ministry, as a member of two district committees on ministry, as chair of the Commission on the Status and Role of Women, and currently as a member of the Commission on Christian Unity and Inter-religious Concerns. She also taught at three Schools of Mission for United Methodist Women and led many studies for UMW's across the conference, and is currently serving as a board member of the Amos Commission for the Austin district of the UMC.
