Great music! Wonderful musicians, great volunteers and a great cause.  Proceeds from the Susanna's Kitchen concerts go to help people in our community who are in need, through Barnabas Connection,  Wimberley Community Assistance Fund, and other Wimberley-area nonprofits, plus scholarships for pre-schoolers at Bright Beginnings.

Great food! Delicious pies, tamales, pizza, coffee, and soft drinks available. Doors open by 7:00 pm. Concerts start at 7:30 pm and are held in the Fellowship Hall at Wimberley United Methodist Church.

Great Cause! We all benefit – those who come to hear the best music in Wimberley, those who have a great time volunteering their talents to produce the concerts, and the people who are helped by our donations. Mark your calendars for every Third Thursday year round.

Tickets are sold ONLY AT THE DOOR. Tickets range in price from $20-$25 depending on the musician. Cash and checks are currently accepted. Students under 18 are $5.  Concerts are not appropriate for small children, as there is no childcare.

To ensure a good seat, and as some concerts sell out, come early!  Ticket sales begin by 6:30 pm. Arrival between 6:30 pm and 6:45 pm is suggested, especially for very popular musicians.  Doors open by 7 pm. and performances are in the community room (Fellowship Hall). Come early, enjoy dinner with us and enjoy the concert experience in a small, intimate environment. Oh, and don't forget that Susanna's Kitchen Concerts take cash or checks at the gate, but not credit cards or other methods of payment.

Cary Swinney Trio
December 18, 2025

Cary was born on September 10, 1960 in O’Donnell, Texas and spent many of his early years in Lubbock. He has recorded his three albums Human Masquerade, Martha and Big Shots between 1997 and 2005. After the release of his second album, entitled: Martha, Cary was named Songwriter of the Year by Freeform American Roots in 2000. Later that same year, Martha made it to #6 on the Freeform American Roots Radio Chart. His third release, entitled: Big Shots went to #1 in Europe on the EuroAmericana Chart in 2005. That same album, Big Shots, went to # 10 on Satellite Radio in 2005. Swinney’s music has been described as “biting”, “quirky”, “honest”, “gripping” and even “political” by DJs and writers from Texas to Europe to Australia and points in between. Swinney now splits time between New Mexico and Texas. Interestingly, he spends much of his time in a cabin at 8000 feet - which has no electricity, no running water, and no neighbors (a designated wilderness area).

According to LoneStar Music Magazine, he seems to have found a soft spot for the Sunday afternoon slot at Gruene Hall, though, having returned many a time for trio performances with guitarist Michael O’Connor and fiddle legend Richard Bowden. According to Swinney, the owners have told him he is the only act to regularly receive complaints at the historic dance hall — but they always invite him back just the same.

O’Connor, who plays frequently with Gibson, Slaid Cleaves, Adam Carroll and others, says that Swinney gigs are his favorite to perform. The Swinney Trio, he says, has never practiced a song, rehearsed an intro or bridge, or even discussed a set list, and yet, in his estimation, they have never played anything less than a great show. Swinney lets them do their own thing and you never know what will happen. “The lyrics stand alone as great poems, and Richard and I just frame the words with music,” O’Connor says. “It is like a magic trick Cary pulls off. Of course, having Richard Bowden in the mix helps with that Lubbock magic.” (Bowden is known for his work with, among others, the Maines Brothers, Terry Allen’s Panhandle Mystery Band, the Austin Lounge Lizards, and Will T. Massey.)

“Swinney’s songs all have the ring of truth to them,” O’Connor says, “Whether you agree or not, Swinney makes you think. Some people do not like to think, and those people probably will not like Swinney."

Join us for the Cary Swinney Trio at Susanna’s Kitchen on December 18 at the Wimberley United Methodist Church fellowship hall. Tickets for adults are $25, students under 18 are $5 (cash or check only). Doors open by 7pm and the concert starts at 7:30pm. Pizza, tamales, nachos and pie are available for purchase.
